About Me | Rowena Squires
I am a PhD Candidate in Children's Literature at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge. My research examines depictions of colonialism in outer space, specifically focusing on the legacy of Disney and children's animation.
The broader thematic interests of my work revolve around public history and education, especially how culture and media affect the construction of historical narratives and memory. I have a background in Ancient History, and received my MRes in Classics and Ancient History from the University of Exeter in 2021 and my BA in Ancient History from University of Exeter in 2018. My master's thesis explored ancient orientalism in the early novel, entitled “Babylon in the Greek Imaginaire.”
In addition to my academic research, I write and develop public-facing historical and educational material. I founded and previously ran my own local tour guide company in Cambridge called Town & Gown Tours. In addition, I do freelance writing projects for educational exhibits, including at English Heritage sites, as well as promotional and outreach material, such as Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
I have experience in the film industry and am currently developing independent television and film scripts that engage with many of the core themes of my research. In my free time, I am a shodan [black belt] in aikido and am working towards my coaching license.
